GfK logo_very smallThe increasing trend in the adoption of smartmobilephones is a factor – with the product being an efficient all-in-one substitute for portable media players and camcorders.

These two products saw a double digit fall, resulting a decline in overall sector trends within consumer electronics. However, headphones achieved notable growth of 25.7% and 52.4% respectively in sales units and value.

Within IT, media tablets continued its winning streak, earning more than 30% in value share as it experienced growth of 60% in sales units and 21% in sales value in the first quarter of this year. Nevertheless, the market saw a decline of close to 25% in price YTD March 2013 owing to an increase in sales of media tablets sold below RM750.

Outlook of home appliances in the year of 2013 is positive. Up till the first quarter of this year, the performance of air conditioners, washing machines and cooling looks promising, experiencing double digit growths. Analysis of overall trends show the sales in air conditioner sales peaked earlier than the usual months in May and July.

There is an indication that trends this year will be similar to 2011, where the hot weather season came earlier, possibly shifting the two sales peaks to March and May.
